Coach Roenicke and the rest of the Santa Fe Christian Baseball team hosted the Lancers of Francis Parker on Thursday afternoon. This was the second time the teams had met this week and the third time this season. Coming into the game on Thursday the series was tied at 1-1. Junior Stephen Pierson got the start but was a late addition to the starting lineup due to an injury to Senior Ethan Paulson, who has a broken nose.
The lefty pitcher struggled a bit to start the game and he allowed the Lancers to score 1 run in the top of the first. The Eagles were held hitless until Pierson hit a single in the bottom of the 4th. Pierson finished the day with allowing 5 hits, 1 earned run and striking out 3 in 5 innings. Coach Roenicke made a defensive switch in the bottom of the 6th. Coach took Sophomore catcher Jack Hartung, who was playing very solid defensively, out of the game and replaced him with Sophomore Kian Hogan. Roenicke moved Pierson from the mound to right field and he moved Sophomore Luke Haux from right field to left and moved Junior Ian Coykendall, who was playing left field, behind the plate. Those moves opened up the mound for the left handed Hogan.
His first inning of work resulted in forcing 2 ground outs and a fly ball to the outfield. The top of the 7th started with Hogan getting the first out. The next batter hit a fly ball that was dropped in right field, the outfielder tried to throw the runner out as he was returning to first, the errant throw hit the runner. The official ruling on the field allowed the runner to take 3rd base. Kian found himself with 1 out and a runner on 3rd base. Hogan struck out the next batter to get the second out before they intentionally walked the 4th batter of the inning. Junior Ian Coykendall saved the inning multiple times behind the plate by blocking and preventing any passed balls. Hogan forced a ground out to end the inning.
The Eagles had a chance in the bottom of the 7th inning with Stephen Pierson getting a single, but could not get anything going. The Lancers held on to win 1-0 and give SFC their first lost at home this season. Their next game is Tuesday, May 15th at La Jolla Country Day.by Brad Sandusky
